We’re a charity for adults with learning disabilities or autism throughout Cornwall
Cornwall People First is a user-led self advocacy charity for adults with learning disabilities or autism throughout Cornwall. We support people to speak up for themselves and work closely with the services they receive to improve things, helping people to achieve the life they want.
We are a ‘Self Advocacy Group’. We help each other. We speak up, campaigning and lobbying about things that are important to us. This means people with a learning disability or autism meeting up together to talk and have fun. We make friends. We meet other self advocates across the UK.
Thanks to Awards For All, The Big Lottery Fund: More than 80 people with learning disabilities, their Carers and Support, have completed FREE TRAINING with our Cornwall People First Quality Checkers. Furthermore, this was achieved with our accessible ‘Citizenship For All’ course.
In memory of Maurice Shurmer
7th November 1950 – 26th July 2021
Maurice was a highly valued and popular member of Cornwall People First.
He was our Penzance forum representative for many years, and regularly attended other groups and events.
In 2019 he became one of our Trustees and was proud of being voted onto the Trustee Board. He was really enjoying his new role, helping us to make important decisions.
He came to the Learning Disability Partnership Board meetings where he helped give our presentations, and was he was always ready to speak up about the things that were important to him.
He was a very reliable person who made great speeches and was always willing to help if he could.
Maurice was a great self-advocate and a great friend.
He was cheerful and kind, and a friend to everyone: he will be missed by us all.
