This is a story about the recent South West Regional Forum for People with Learning Disabilities by People First Quality Checker, Andrew Bainbridge.
The meeting was held on 14th September at The Beehive, Honiton, Devon.
“Cornwall People First along with North Somerset Advocacy have been asked by Inclusion North to help run the South West Forum until March 2017.
Earlier this month we held our first meeting. I had to get up early as the meeting was in Honiton. I travelled with my work colleague, who is also a quality checker. At the meeting I met up with my other colleagues Kate, and Maurice who is a Cornwall People First Penzance Forum Rep.
There were lots of self advocates from speak up organisations from all over the South West from as far away as Dorset.
Everyone told us about the work that they do and what they are proud of. There were lots of other organisations doing Quality Checking, running forums and exciting projects just like Cornwall People First.
Lots of people were having a hard time with funding. We think we should help each other!
It is the job of the meeting to speak out about what is happening in our area. The regional representative is ‘Tammy Peapell’, who will be able to tell government what we think. We will tell the government how important self advocacy is.
We can also raise money together.
It was so good to meet with other people who are just like us.
We will have a meeting in Cornwall soon so we hope that lots of you will come along and help us to speak up!”
